Any instant rice is bad! Saute some diced onion, carrots, celery (whatever you have, really!) for a couple of minutes in a little oil. Add uncooked brown rice (not instant) and increase the heat a bit. When rice turns golden brown, pour in chicken broth (the amount of liquid should be whatever the package says). Throw in some garlic if desired. Cook according to package directions.
My teen son and I love brown rice cooked this way. You can toss in some chopped prsley or other herbs, too, if you like. Keep in mind that brown rice will be chewier than white. I like it that way--it's not mushy.
Serve it with veggies on top, flavor it with salt, pepper and ginger. I like it with Salmon.
You can make a casserole of salmon fish, broccoli, onions, and brown rice.....bake about 25 minutes around 350 degrees....I love that one.....cook the brown rice some first, before mixing it with the other ingredients and baking.
Another good combo is brown rice and pinto beans, or just about any type of beans.
I've tried out many recipes from this website and was very happy with the results.
Healthy recipes without compromising the good taste, I just don't have to worry about my waist line.
Hope you enjoy. :)

Instant rice is not the best tasting- it is what students use to survive on when the pizza bill is too high and they haven't learned to do much more than boil water. For a little side dish or a basis- 1/4cup split green peas, 1/4 cup lentils, 1 cup brown rice, 2 cups water in a bowl, bring to boil a couple minutes. Stir mix and reduce heat to a simmer, cover bowl and let slow simmer 1/2 hour. Stir in about 1/2 cup of medium or hot Salsa, cover again and turn off heat, let set 5-10 minutes. This will hold a teenager a couple hours, or make a simple side dish to almost any meat course. This is a Dall and brown Rice one dish simple lunch- the tomato based spiced salsa is put in at end to retain flavor. I have put in sliced carrots- about 1/2 cup also for some color. The rice and split green peas, lentils have a basic 1/2 hour to 45 minutes cooking time so all done at same time, carrots also cook about 1/2 hour. Tomatoes cook in 10 minutes so they are added at end. If rice, etc doesn't seem done at end- add another 1/2 cup water with the salsa and bring to boil, cover and then shut off heat, set 10 minutes covered .
